Here are the benefits for tracking your total body composition with an Omron Full Body Sensor. | | | | | | | | | What is the Bioelectrical Impedance Method? Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) is considered one of the most accurate and accessible methods of screening body fat and other body composition measurements in the privacy of your own home. Within seconds, BI sends an extremely weak signal to measure the inside of your body. Muscle, blood, bone and body tissue have high water content, which means they conduct the BI signal easily. Body fat, however, stores no water, so the BI signal is blocked or impeded from easily traveling throughout the body. The blocked signal (or high impedance) indicates the presence of more body fat. | | | Product Dimensions The HBF-510W uses (4) AA batteries that last with normal use for about a year. Blatantly Unreliable September 4, 2010 William Evins (Arlington Heights, IL United States) This page says the measurements are very accurate. You read the instructions that come with the item and they have clear disclaimers saying that the measurements CANNOT [my caps} be relied upon to be accurate. The instructions even have numeric charts showing how your numbers relate to high, normal, low in that category. If the numbers cannot be relied upon, why do they publish charts with the product? Who can trust the numbers at all because of this? The only thing you may get out of this is relative changes in the numbers from this device over time, assuming the machine is consist in its variation, definitely not how absolutely accurate they are, or against another brand's equivalent measure.
Amazing How it Can Tell So Much! September 2, 2010 John Kitsmiller (Taylor, TX) Assuming everything is accurate, it is absolutely amazing how much it can tell you about your body. It is very easy to use and allows up to 4 users to keep track of things. It comes with a sheet of paper for tracking your weight, BMI, etc. I would suggest you make copies or do as I did and recreate it in Excel.
Nice to know exactly how fat I am. August 24, 2010 lighten_up_already2 (Kirkland, WA USA) Well, I suspected I was a bit out of shape, and now I've got the exact statistics. Of course, the only way to verify accuracy of a machine like this is to get an even more epensive machine to test it against, and I'm not about to do that. So I suppose it's all relative. Begin with a benchmark and the persue fitness the way you see fit, and then keep measureing over the weeks and months to see progress. I was impressed with the easy setup and use, and by the fact that my weight came out so close to the high quality balance scale I use to weigh myself. That part I can verify. If you want to see yourself lose fat, and not just track weight, this might be a good place to start.
Inconsistently inconsistent and inaccurate to boot August 10, 2010 J. Moore I received this scale as a gift from my girlfriend. The primary reason I wanted the scale was its supposed ability to calculate a body fat percentage. The scale divined that my body fat was around 18% which even when used right after waking up every day varied by a few percentage points. According to the information that came with the scale anything over 20% body fat for a man in my age range is high. Essentially, if this scale is to be trusted, I'm borderline fat. Thing is, at 5'8, 150 pounds, and a 28 inch waist I'm reluctant to trust this scale's measurement of my body fat at all. Maybe I'm skinny fat. Strangely enough, I can bench around 235 pounds and I am fairly athletic, going to the gym four times a week or so. The manufacturer does state that the scale doesn't work on accurately on "bodybuilders or highly trained athletes." I don't consider myself in either of these categories though. Fit would probably be the best description. Why the scale is inaccurate (I think) I decided to play with the scale and change my height from 5'8 to 6' even. Low and behold I went from nearly 20% body fat to 7%. Based on the bio-electrical impedance method of measuring fat, my height shouldn't really change the level of body fat much at all. Under that method (which this scale supposedly uses) an electrical impulse is sent through the body and because water (which muscle primarily is composed of) conducts electricity easily but fat does not, it's able to determine a rough estimation of your body fat percentage. Your athletic level shouldn't matter because the electrical impulse should reflect a higher muscle and lower body fat because of the varying electrical resistance. However, because this scale uses a formula for determining your body fat based primarily on height and weight, if you're even reasonably fit, it throws the calculation dramatically off. The formula the scale uses to determine your fat percentage has the same flaws as the Body Mass Index (BMI) which is why it doesn't work if you have more muscle mass than the average person. What to buy instead Fat calipers or a body fat scale that doesn't require height or gender information to calculate your body fat percentage. Height and gender should only really be needed for your BMI. Beware though, body fat scales aren't known for accuracy. But if you can find one that's consistently inaccurate(it gives the same body fat % every time you weigh even if it's wrong) they can be great for measuring progress.
An Excellent Tool to Improve your Health July 31, 2010 D. Buxman (Pueblo, CO United States) This is the first scale I've had that calculated body fat percentages and BMI, so I was a bit disappointed with the initial readings. This prompted me to modify my diet and exercise more, which is a nice benefit in and of itself. This scale is accurate, has clear directions and is easy to use. You can set it to take readings for a family of 4 plus a guest. This instruction manual is informative and helps in setting targets for improvement. Batteries are included as a nice bonus.
